Also a member of Spanish indie pop group The Fruhstucks, Sutja Gutierrez draws inspiration from the dream weavers and New Romantics of the 80s…New Order, Visage, and Roxy Music’s later albums come to mind.  Gutiérrez has now ventured into solo territory, and the results are surprisingly more experimental.

Specifically with Cult & Truth, Gutiérrez has drifted away from traditional song structure.  Tracks like Stuff Song begin as any synth pop composition would, but quickly veer in all directions, meandering into a tripped-out space odyssey, changing the entire shape of the song as if it was a ball of play dough.  All 11 tracks follow suit in this way, begging for a repeat listen and challenging you to find something new embedded in the layers that you didn’t hear before.

If this is what pop music sounds like in Spain, perhaps it’s high time I paid a visit.  Only 100 of these hand-stamped covers exist.  Get one before they’re agotado.
