Shapes Freely is a Northern California duo made up of visual artist and musician Brook Caballero and musician/engineering mastermind Ben Milner. Â Quoting the group, “if Shapes Freely’s self-titled debut was a movie, it would be Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 Space Odyssey.” Â Well then…I’m intrigued.
At first glance, Shapes Freely sounds like a band wearing mainly folk music inspirations on their sleeves, but there are twists and surprises behind every nook and cranny of the album’s 10 tracks.  Opener Born trips out with a galactic accordion (seriously!), and two minutes in I could swear I was listening to a lost Sunny Day Real Estate demo.  Genres collide into each other like satellites and space debris.  What is this music exactly?  Space folk?!
Whatever it is, and whatever you’re into…you’re going to like something about this album.  Give it a spin below and pick up some hazy vinyl for $20.
