RIYL: Smith Westerns, Girls, Beach Fossils, Wild Nothing
Real Estate returns with their 5th studio album, The Main Thing, set to hit our eardrums in its entirety on February 28th. As the 80’s influenced trend continues, Real Estate jumps on the bandwagon with their new single “Paper Cup” which features Amelia Meath of Sylvan Esso. The song starts off with the synth and dated muffled sounds you’d expect, but as it carries on the band adds their catchy guitar work, smooth and seamless vocals complimented by Amelia and pop driven rhythms creating something more unique than anticipated. The video is something from a childhood nightmare and is definitely worth the view.
Something from Domino:
Today, Real Estate announceĀ The Main Thing.Ā OutĀ February 28thĀ on Domino, the brand new album delivers the bandās most inspired and self-aware set of songs to date, created over the course of a year at upstate New Yorkās Marcata Sound.
Following his work on 2011āsĀ Days, engineerĀ Kevin McMahonĀ returns as producer, and, for the first time ever, Real Estate have brought in outside instrumentalists and special guests likeĀ Sylvan Esso, whose vocalistĀ Amelia MeathĀ features on first single,Ā āPaper Cupā. Across the 13 interrogative tracks ā as full of depth,Ā strangeness, and contradictions as they are lifting hooks ā the band balances existential, environmental, and political anxieties with fatherly sentiments, self-satirizing lyrics, forever-lively guitar lines, and shimmering strings.
The Main ThingĀ arrives with a fresh commitment the members of Real Estate –Ā Alex BleekerĀ (bass), Martin Courtney (vocals, guitar),Ā Matthew KallmanĀ (keyboards),Ā Julian LynchĀ (guitar, vocals), andĀ Jackson PollisĀ (drums and drum programming) – have made to each other, 10 years and 5 full-length LPs into a career spent crafting unmistakable and influential palettes of sound.
Primary songwriter Martin Courtney explains,Ā āEven before we decided where to record or who to record it with, I knew it needed to sound that good,āĀ but as Alex Bleeker adds,Ā āWe discovered through the care and attention that we brought to this record that making music to resonate with other people is our catharsis. The āmain thingā is following your path of inspiration and hoping to inspire that in people around you.ā
