Monotreme Records’ consistency is their inconsistency, releasing a steady stream of artists with drastically different styles.  In turn, they dodge any risk of being pigeonholed.  Sift through their catalogue and you’ll find post rock, experimental pop, noise, and some of indie rock’s weirder tentacles.
Niagara are a duo from Turin, Italy, and their influences are vast.  The warpy carnival ride synths beginning Fat Kaoss show a deep appreciation for Boards of Canada, Black Moth Super Rainbow and the oft-overlooked Freescha.  Tinny glitch hop loops call Prefuse 73 and his ilk to mind, and Davide Tomat’s raspy glam vocal delivery add a touch of feminity to the already-diverse equation.
They’ve described the album’s theme as the “ongoing struggle to balance our desire to develop and exploit technology against the need to make technology more sympathetic to nature.” Â Chew on that, slick.
Niagara is the collaborative project of artists/producers David Tomat (TOMAT / N.A.M.B./ GEMINI EXCERPT) and Gabriele Ottino (N.A.M.B. / Milena Lovesick / GEMINI EXCERPT), whose off-kilter take on pop incorporates elements of electronic, psychedelic, Eastern and dance music.
