Active since 2001, French singer and multi-instrumentalist Anthony Gonzalez has evolved M83 from an electronic project to an arena-filling dream pop band. Before and after his last M83 album in 2016, Gonzalez was immersed in the world of soundtracks, composing the score for 2014’s You and the Night and this year’s Knife + Heart, both eclectic in their wide-ranged instrumentation and overall tone. Now that 3 years have passed since Junk, M83 is ready to spring another concept onto us…video game music.
Made with nothing but analog instruments, Gonzalez is combining his love of soundtracks with his love for vintage sounds and recording. No songs have been released yet, so all we can do is speculate. Is M83 going full vaporwave? Are we going to get Link to the Past, but with saxophones? Who cares, it’s M83. Insta BEFORE I hear a track. That’s how good he is.
Mute will release M83’s Digital Shades Vol. 2 on September 20, 2019. It will be available in limited edition pink galaxy color double vinyl, CD, and digital formats.
The inspiration behind this record is mainly video game music. It felt so refreshing to play all of these old school games again. I wanted to be surrounded by nature and the past. I would only feed myself with older art. It’s almost as if I couldn’t stand living in the present. This is probably why it was important for me to only use analog equipment for this record. We recorded everything with vintage equipment in my studio and at Justin Meldal-Johnsen’s studio in Glendale, California during final production.
