In 2018, the Indiana indie rock trio Hoops announced an indefinite hiatus citing various proximity and time constraints, but threw in a few “ifs” and “maybes” for a reunion if everything aligned in the future. Well, that time has come! Their critically-accalimed 2017 full-length Routines combined ambient atmosphere with jangly guitar leads without sounding derivative of the Captured Tracks sound. It’s easy to shrug a band with those elements as another Demarco clone or Wild Nothing disciple, but Hoops found their own sound with some truly interesting songwriting and unique chord progressions. Needless to say, I’m thrilled they’re back together making new songs. This new LP is titled Halo and will be out in late September.
So far, there are 3 colored vinyl variants I’m aware of, a blue vinyl exclusive from Fat Possum Records (get that one after the ‘buy’ link), an American indie store version on ‘yellow smoke’ vinyl you can get from various online distros like HERE, and a UK-only ‘Dinked’ version on green and blue marbled wax that you can pick up online HERE, HERE and plenty of other spots. Check out their first single below and pick up a colorway of your choosing while they last.
An album defined by musical exuberance, full of gratitude and generosity to counteract and compliment the deep undercurrents of melancholy coursing through every hook and riff, Halo sounds like a lively conversation among close friends, each song a high five, as they look for some stability in their lives and figure out what they owe themselves, each other, and everyone around them.
