RIYL: The Magnetic Fields, Jens Lekman, David Byrne

Label: Chapter Music

Melbourne singer-songwriter eccentric Gregor is back with another batch of eclectic pop explorations for his sophomore release Silver Drop.  His 2016 debut Thoughts & Faults was a highly experimental endeavor, a mix of David Byrne’s nervous energy and Stephin Merritt’s playful earnestness.  Chalk full of compelling off-kilter guitar work and wobbly synth blips, the album’s seemingly outsider appeal is still surprisingly listenable for mainstream audiences, a similar phenomenon for artists like John Maus, Ariel Pink and Talking Heads.

According to Gregor, Silver Drop “is the result of a yearning to free my self from lyrical inhibitions”, so expect a more open and honest piece of work here while maintaining the adventurous musical tinkering that you loved with Thoughts & Faults.  Check out the leadoff single A Song About Holding Hands below, a much more straightforward and transparent approach than his previous work, and grab the limited bone-colored wax after the ‘buy’ link.  It’s shipping from Australia, so shipping will reflect a higher price than usual.
