As Gospel Claws began recording Put Your Sunshine Away, lead singer and guitarist Joel Marquard (former Dear and the Headlights guitarist) was diagnosed with testicular cancer and they continued to record even as Marquard received treatment.

The band has made light about the experience:

“The running joke at the moment is if Gospel Claws‘ new record sounds a little less ballsy than the first, at least there’s a valid explanation for it. ‘Most bands’ sophomore records are kind of mellower than the first, but usually not for medical reasons.’

Put Your Sunshine Away‘s stated influences include: ’50s doo-wop, Sam Cooke, and the Beach Boys.
