A drastic departure from the previous album that put them in the map (Ribbons & Sugar), ‘In the Land of Lost Monsters’ demonstrated the new mature direction of GAD, and is now available on vinyl for the first time! Pianos and soft acoustic rock are accompanied by rough, melancholic lyrics that show a band at a crossroads between the pop lyricism and the alt rock storytelling that I have come to love them for. Consequently, my favorite song, Bandlands, is also on their next album ‘Volcano.’ The song itself lends itself well to blending the downtrodden sounds with an upbeat pop-synth, not really seen before or since. Pick it up, for nostalgia’s sake!
