Brooklyn dreamgazers DIIV are the poster boys for resilience. Their landmark 2012 debut Oshin cast the group as indie rock elites, thrusting them into the industry whirlwind before they understood the reality of their position. Press junkets, tour blitzkriegs and all of the backstage souvenirs that go along with it, DIIV nearly imploded before they reached the clouds. Rehab, band member controversies, public breakups…we all know the story. Thankfully, as their 2016 sophomore LP Is The Is Are reassured us, DIIV isn’t going anywhere. This year will see album number three, a continued exploration on the complexities of addiction through frontman Zachary Cole Smith’s eyes. If you grabbed their first two records, Deserter should be a no-brainer. Dreamy, fuzzy melancholic bliss awaits you. Check out the first single Skin Game below.
There are a bevy of variants, as you’d expect. The ‘buy’ link takes you to Captured Tracks’ variant, a swirly tri-colored colorway limited to 2000 copies. Rough Trade has an exclusive translucent galaxy variant with an additional 7″ you can grab HERE. There’s also a grey variant you can get from the same store page that’s limited to 3000. Newbury Comics and Vinyl Me, Please will most likely have some variants forthcoming. If you know of any other versions, throw them in the comments!
Occupying the corners between fuzzed-out shoegaze bliss, troubadour poetry, and metallic catharsis, DIIV - Zachary Cole Smith [lead vocals, guitar], Colin Caulfield [vocals, bass], Andrew Bailey [guitar], and Ben Newman [drums] - personally inhabit the recesses of their third full-length album, Deceiver. A whirlwind brought DIIV here.
