Daughn Gibson came at us out of the blue back in 2012, a mysterious loner from Carlisle, Pennsylvania with a voice that could test any subwoofer to the limits. 2015 sees Gibson sauntering into the spotlight again with his third album Carnation, his second on Sub Pop Records.
Known for his pitch-perfect low-octave croon, Gibson channels the off-road dirt paths of Americana and country blues that our grandfathers played us when we were kids, but entwines layers of¬†cavernous dream pop¬†a la Mazzy Star and early Red House Painters, weaving a unique brand of American songwriting for any generation to identify with. ¬†He drew comparisons to other bass vocal rangers like John Maus and Dirty Beaches, but Gibson’s songwriting felt¬†a lot more introspective and personal, especially on¬†2012’s deeply melancholic¬†All Hell.
His newest track Shatter You Through is a much more rhythmic and glossy production, employing horns and¬†flittering pianos. ¬†His vocal is more breathy and seductive, like a seasoned mid-career¬†David Bowie. ¬†I even hear some similarities with The National’s more upbeat tracks, but again…Daughn Gibson ain’t riding anyone’s coattails. ¬†He’s a true innovator, and I expect Carnation to¬†hurl him into a much wider audience this year. ¬†Grab the ‘Loser’ edition after the ‘buy’ link.
