Edmonton-based Alex Calder has been a solo man since his Time EP dropped in 2013 on Captured Tracks, but he’s sharpened his teeth as a company man in his buddy Mac Demarco’s former group Makeout Videotape.  Multi-instrumentalist and ‘jizz jazz’ aficionado, Calder is an unassuming talent and genre defier.  One minute he’s walking down a lofi jangle pop trail, and the next one he’s tripping down a psych folk path…but don’t get comfortable, because he’ll take a sharp right turn into an alleyway of acid-drenched jams and stompers.

He’s the perfect choice for those days where you don’t know what the hell you want and you have no place to go.  He’s your soulmate for those deep-fried evenings and he’ll stick around in the morning to help you with your hangover.  Get excited for his first big full-length, and leave your expectations at the door.

The Details

Alex Calder’s sophomore release with Captured Tracks is as familiar as it is foreign – brining together both infectious melodies and texture to create tidy, acid-induced pop sequences. Strange Dreams takes a confident step forward from Calder’s previous release and brings the focus and ambition of Alex’s songwriting to all aspects of his music. This record delivers, while still maintaining the youthful humour that has become his trademark.
