Label: Rough Trade

Young, independent artists proclaiming they are out there doing whatever they want, that they don’t care what anyone thinks, etc., is a bit trite at times, but Princess Nokia may be the truest example of someone living the sentiment with sincerity. Unapologetically her outspoken self, proud of her womanhood, her New York-ness, and her roots, Destiny Frasqueri is using her voice to make more room in hip-hop and music for people who need and deserve it. Frasqueri has sported a few stage names since 2010, proving within the New York underground scene that she can shift and meld genres with ease, but it was the first incarnation of her rap album 1992, which she released online for free last year, that spread like wildfire and gained her major international attention. Reworked and expanded, 1992 Deluxe is her first “official” release, with the addition of even more bangers, like ominous trap number “G.O.A.T.” that proves the bragging boys club of rap is long overdue to make space for girls to brag all they want too…and even if it won’t, Princess Nokia will make it herself.
