RIYL: Tribe Called Quest, Eyedea & Abilities, Souls of Mischief

Label: Machine Wash Music

Chantalism and Ubiquity, two Chicago MCs starting out in the mid 2000s, enjoyed a hard-to-find chemistry despite their stylistic differences, a unique pairing that unfortunately didn’t find them widespread acclaim.  They sampled crackling jazz obscurities in the vein of Digable Planets and A Tribe Called Quest, but displayed intense lyrical prowess similar to Atmosphere and Aesop Rock.  Despite the boom of trap and mumble, Maintenance Crew don’t sound particularly dated.  There’s a classic vibe floating around in these tracks, and they’re all available on vinyl for the first time ever.

Simplified is a ‘greatest hits’ type of thing, pulling favorites from their five albums released during 2005-2011.  Take a listen to the whole thing below and grab a super limited copy of the vinyl on creamsicle orange after the ‘buy’ link.
