RIYL: J Dilla, ZZ Hill, Guilty Simpson
Label: Madlib Invazion
Medicine Show was originally conceived by Madlib to be a project where he released an album a month for two years. He ended up taking a little more than 2 years to pull it off and in the end had 13 distinct albums and mixtapes.
The list of collaborators is just as long as the list of genres are touched upon throughout the massive set.
One of the aspects that I’m most excited about is having the artwork in large format. Stones Throw did the original release and they went all out in developing unique artwork for each release.
This boxset is for the diehards. I mean, you clicked on this article. You’re one of us.
It prices out at under $10 per LP and domestic shipping is free. This is a badass boxset that can stand as a cornerstone of any collection.
MADLIB'S EPIC MEDICINE SHOW SERIES MAKES IT TO VINYL AS THE "BRICK" BOX SET FOR THE FIRST TIME! Originally released as a monthly series of 13 albums and mixtapes, The Medicine Show solidified Madlib's rep as a genius digger, DJ and producer. From Stones Throw: "When Madlib launched his Madlib Medicine Show... the original idea was simple: twelve releases, one per month, alternating between original works and mixtapes spanning dierent genres. It took a little longer than planned to hit number 12 - so we ordered up a bonus, number 13. We call this collection The Brick. The Brick contains seven albums with thirteen LPs, all of the originally-produced material by Madlib in the series. The Madlib Medicine Show Series is a combination of Madlib's new hip-hop productions, remixes, beat tapes, and jazz, as well as mixtapes of funk, soul, Brazilian, psych, jazz and other undefined forms of music from the Beat Konducta's 4-ton stack of vinyl." In summation: you get 8 Medicine Shows as 6 double LP's, plus an additional single LP housed in a slipcase featuring wraps designed by Jeff Jank mounted on a chipboard shell. Recommended.
