“I miss the old Kanye”.
– Kanye West
In 1979, Bob Dylan was in the middle of a fairly significant “born again” period of his career as an artist. Others refer to it as his “Christian phase.” Randy Newman, a fellow satirist and revered songwriter himself, had his own thoughts about Dylan finding Jesus, as did members of his audience that day who clapped, giggled nervously or guffawed in protest. And it’s the same now as it was then. You either 1) understood that artists change and would inevitably have opinions that differentiated from yours, 2) shrugged with defiant apathy or 3) you rejected the art entirely and were comfortable saying “you preferred the earlier stuff”. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way to respond as a listener, but I can’t understand how anyone could be surprised that Kanye’s coming out with an album called Jesus is King. The man unashamedly transforms, adapts, contradicts, shocks and re-evaluates himself in real time. While I can’t say I’m a fan of all of Kanye’s material, I sure as hell can’t say he’s boring. Of course I bought a copy of the blue vinyl! $25 is a small investment to get a peak into the mind of one of music’s most complex/beloved/hated artists of our lifetime.
What about you? Are you ready for this new Kanye? Or do you miss that old Kanye? Or do you merely wait with bated breath for new sounds from King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard? Either way, the K Train’s a-comin’, and it’ll be here soon.
