RIYL: Earl Sweatshirt, Open Mike Eagle, Shabazz Palaces
Label: POW! Recordings / Vinyl Me, Please
As The Streets declared back in 2002 on Has It Come To This, “This ain’t a club track, pull out yer sack and sit back.” So it is with Chester Watson, a meditative and cerebral Florida up-and-comer who gained a lot of attention from the hip hop community and beyond with his 2016 sophomore album Past Cloaks. Similar to Earl Sweatshirt, Chester’s flow is so natural that it feels like he’s just having a conversation with you. Sedated and psychedelic, Project 0 is an album for the heads. Just when you fall firmly into a trance, though, Chester slaps you back into reality with some wickedly intelligent and twisted bars. There’s no doubt that this will probably be my favorite hip hop album of the year.
The white vinyl exists courtesy of Vinyl Me, Please, who also released Past Cloaks on colored vinyl. That one sells for upwards of $75 already, and it’s only going up from here as Chester continues his journey to the highest peaks of the hip hop summit. Only 250 copies of the white vinyl are available on the Bandcamp page, so if you aren’t a member of VMP, now’s your opportunity. Listen to the full album below and get some wax after the ‘buy’ link.
