Blood Orange is dropping Angel’s Pulse, a mixtape which is something of an epilogue to his critically acclaimed 2018 album Negro Swan, October 4th.
“My new record is called Angel‚Äôs Pulse & I performed, produced, and mixed the entire thing myself. I‚Äôm calling it a mixtape. I have a habit through the years of making records that I just give to friends, or on tape to people on the street, or no one. Usually this material is made directly after the album I‚Äôve just put out. Somewhat of an epilogue to the thing I‚Äôve made before. This time… I decided to release it.
I put as much work and care into it as I do with the albums I‚Äôve released, but for some reason trained myself into not releasing things the rate at which I make them. I‚Äôm older now though, and life is unpredictable and terrifying… so here you go mates.” – Devont√© Hynes (Blood Orange) says.
There are multiple limited variants of this record, so see below to grab what suits your fancy. The singles sound pretty stellar and the collaborations are on point. Here is a little blub from VMP (Which could put out a variant):
Angel‚Äôs Pulse¬†traces the lineage of Hynes‚Äô influence by allowing them to blossom in the most unexpected ways. The holy undertones of¬†Negro Swan¬†continue to bubble beneath the ongoing struggles presented here. (See ‚ÄúBirmingham,‚ÄĚ a searing tribute to the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing of 1963.) There‚Äôs also a subtle, lingering queerness embedded deep in the hues of the tape, per the custom in Blood Orange‚Äôs oeuvre. (‚ÄúBaby Florence (Figure)‚ÄĚ pivots between runway-ready ballroom house and an insular, ambient pop.) Where¬†Negro Swan¬†felt much larger and swelling,¬†Angel‚Äôs Pulse¬†dwells in isolation and makes due with the exhilaration that comes from an uncertain tomorrow. Where its predecessor paves the way to accepting the nothingness, this mixtape gives the meaningless a new glow and even less clarity as Hynes continues to wait for the smoke to clear. In tandem, perhaps Hynes has offered much more than a roadmap to self-love and resistance‚Ķ perhaps he‚Äôs reminding one to give one‚Äôs self permission to be lost, found, and lost once more. Quite the even trade for such stunning steps forward toward the unknown.
