Antwon broke on to the scene five years ago, and you might’ve only learned about him relatively recently via his collaboration with Deafheaven’s Kerry McCoy (which you can file under things you’d’ve never thought of (and which happened almost three years ago now… (I realize I’m getting old…))). Although, if knew Antwon’s backstory which Anticon notes, this man “cut his teeth at punk and hardcore shows…”
Antwon’sÂ Double Ecstasy is not only a far cry from punk & hardcore, but its unabashed in its hedonism and you feel like you’re sipping on some syrup with the man as you engage (perhaps the vinyl’s transparent red for a reason other than the rose) – the most blatant, and graphic, in this all-too-short EP is “Girl, Flex.” When the EP cuts off, you feel like you snap out of the high Antwon provided you. Antwon’s lyrics aren’t buried in metaphors and it feels voyeuristic – as if Antwon’s carving a gaping porthole for you to gaze in to his life. Over the course of the past decade, ANTWON has made a name for himself with rowdy live shows and making music thatâ€™s sometimes brooding, often hilarious, and always rooted in human relationships. His latest effort, the DOUBLE ECSTASY EP, touches on all of the San Jose native's favorite topics: sex, successfully navigating clubs, the dri-fit shirt you canâ€™t quite fit into, and more sex. But just when you think youâ€™ve stood in line outside this venue before, he turns on a dimeâ€”these aren't the same characters youâ€™ve seen before.
"I feel like this record is a rebirth,â€ť ANTWON says. Where heâ€™s spent the last five years writing and recording in isolation, DOUBLE ECSTASY finds him fully collaborative with producer Lars Stalfors. â€śThis record was definitely the most fun to make,â€ť he adds, â€śit showed me why I started playing in bands and collaborating with other people.â€ť
The results are superb. He oscillates between â€śLuvâ€ťâ€™s strip club hugs and â€ś100Kâ€ťâ€™s nightmare-induced oral sex, between â€śI drink tea in the club, you drink pee in the clubâ€ť and â€śI done sold my soul so I got a rack.â€ť Heâ€™s the only person on either coast who could slide Beauty and the Beast onto an EP that otherwise sounds like it would be banned from all Disney properties. â€śGirl, Flexâ€ť sounds like Outkastâ€™s â€śGangsta Shitâ€ť if it was was left out in the rain.
Raised in Sunnyvale, a 14-minute Caltrain ride from downtown San Jose, ANTWON cut his teeth at punk and hardcore shows. Thatâ€™s not only evident when heâ€™s making bouncers fear for their lives and flouting noise curfews. Itâ€™s an attitude that seeps into his work even now. You can see it in how he mastered hip-hopâ€™s finer technical points only to break and warp them to suit his own purposes.
Since his breakthrough mixtape, 2011â€™s Fantasy Beds, ANTWON has been praised by critics for his ability to blend aesthetic innovation with a viciously funny personal touch. SPIN has called him â€śelectrifyingly eclecticâ€ť; Pitchfork wrote that his last album, Heavy Hearted in Doldrums, was â€śhis boldest collection yet, grounded in improved production and his characteristic schoolboy wit.â€ť
Clocking in at fewer than 20 minutes, DOUBLE ECSTASY is just long enough for the Uber ride to whichever party your best-connected, least responsible friend has promised to sneak you into. When, on the closer â€śDri-Fit,â€ť ANTWON raps about Molly binges, itâ€™s hard to tell at first if the manic vocal take is supposed to feel like the high, or if the beatâ€™s grey tones are supposed to be the come-down. But thatâ€™s the point: depending on who youâ€™re with, they might look just the same.
