RIYL: Reinterpretations of landmark albums from musical geniuses
Label: Reverberation Appreciation Society
For all those who made the trip to Austin this past weekend for the cancelled-at-the-last-minute Levitation 2016 music festival, I feel for you. I know if I had gone this year, Brian Wilson’s planned performance of the Beach Boys’ masterpiece Pet Sounds would have been a must-see for me. Wilson’s performance at Levitation 2016 was set as the kick-off date of an extensive tour celebrating the album’s 50th anniversary, as well as the first opportunity vinyl lovers could pick up a copy of A Tribute to Pet Sounds, a collection of artists performing the album in its entirety (plus a couple extra tracks thrown in, like The Black Angels performing Good Vibrations). Who knows what happened to the copies designated for the Levitation merch booth (maybe they floated away?) Pick up a dry copy at the link below and try to catch Wilson’s historic tour in a city near you through October.
Brian Wilson (was scheduled to perform) Pet Sounds at the LEVITATION music festival to celebrate the album’s 50th anniversary, on April 30, 2016. In honor of this event festival curators The Reverberation Appreciation Society commissioned Al Lover to curate and produce a tribute to Brian Wilson’s career keystone.
The album will be released exclusively as a 180g 2xLP with gatefold packaging, limited to an edition of 2000. The album (was planned to be) available at the festival starting April 29, 2016, and available in stores with an official street date of May 27, 2016.

Pet Sounds is a fountainhead from which the 15 artists on the album have all drank from as they developed their own musical roots, giving the tribute a rich and flavorful sound. The track listing consists of the original thirteen songs that appeared on the Pet Sounds album, with two bonus songs: “Good Vibrations” and “Hang On To Your Ego.”
Holy Wave’s interpretation of “That’s Not Me” is a sunbaked, organ filled hymn that is a minute longer than the original song. Picking up where Brian Wilson left off in 1966, Holy Wave’s version is a kaleidoscope of ear pleasing notes that take the listener into an elevated listening experience of astonishing detail.
Shannon & The Clams capture Brian Wilson’s feelings of alienation in “I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times”, taking the climactic Beach Boys song and transform it into a garage rock epic with a surf rock spine.
The album opens with The Black Angels’ rendition of Brian Wilson’s masterpiece “Good Vibrations,” which was started during the Pet Sounds sessions but not released on the album. The track is a joyful paradox to The Black Angels’ Phosphene Dream era song “Bad Vibrations.”, and offer of gratitude to Brian Wilson.
