RIYL: Mission of Burma, Wipers, JEFF The Brotherhood, Tubeway Army
Label: Randy Records
Heavy Times’ chooglin, clangin’ rock and roll summons the immediacy of the early 80s indie punk scene.  As raw as Mission of Burma and as weighty as Husker Du, Heavy Times had a clear direction to take once their breakout album Jacker hit the streets in 2011.  They rode on that success with 2013’s brooding and stoned-out Fix It Alone, collaborating again with Chicago’s HoZac Records.  2016 sees the band stepping off their beaten path and setting their sights on new horizons, dabbling in a different kind of early 80s sound.  Synths and robotic rhythms immediately greet your ears on newest single Dancer, but that heavy guitar sound is still in the mix.  Fans of Gary Numan’s Tubeway Army will immediately get what Heavy Times are doing here.
100 copies of their new 7″ will come with Randy Records’ beloved “blank black” treatment.  Randy’s gonna doodle all over your slab of wax with a silver pen, man.  For $4.50, what the hell are you waiting for?
On a side note, rest in fabulosity, Prince.  My wife won a ticket to see you play back in 2013 in Las Vegas, and she ended up giving her ticket to a friend because she wasn’t feeling well.  I still haven’t forgiven her for it.
