Cooked Books are a relatively new band, as The Reader came out in May of last year and it serves as the band’s debut record (period). They hail from Bloomington, Indiana which has become quite the hotbed for indie music in the midwest! I came across these guys when I was reading over a certain Rob Peoni’s piece on We Listen For You, which happened to be over his favorite albums from last year. After giving The Reader a listen through I was a bit stunned at the sheer élan and dynamism exhibited within its contents, yet it didn’t seem to garner any attention from any other publications as far as I know. On the band’s Bandcamp page, they state their formation stemmed off of a Craigslist ad that said “garage/psych/loud” – you definitely get plenty of all three of those on The Reader.  From start to finish, from “Bad Address” to “More Enemies,” it’s like The Reader transports you in to the midst of a late night bar fight – in other words, it’s a solid buy.

I want to thank the band for answering my inquiry (and quickly, at that) regarding the quantity as it’s not posted on their Bandcamp page – they apparently have less than 50 left, so get to it. Check it out via the Bandcamp player below and see what you think of it. Cheers!
