I love the polarity of Sub Pop. ¬†On one side, you have the¬†Mudhoneys and the Pissed Jeans and the Metz boys chewing on coca cola cans, and on the other side, there’s a¬†bevy of beards, paisley shirts, Beach Houses and Fleet Foxes.
Luluc is in the latter camp, lofting fluttery piano and campfire¬†guitar work¬†towards your eardrums in the vein of Nick Drake and Belle and Sebastian’s softer balladry. ¬†Zo√ę Randel sings with such a simple pleasantness, she sends¬†me to an early ’60s Newport Folk Festival, captivating the masses with a unique humility and yet an unwavering optimism for culture and progress.
This is the kind of record that feels wrong on the shelf. ¬†It’s a record to be played, shared and pondered. ¬†You’ll also receive an autographed art print from the band, and¬†may even get some fancy stickers from the Sub Pop warehouse too,¬†so quit thinkin about it. ¬†It’s $14, idiot.
