RIYL: Dawes, Justin Townes Earle, Langhorne Slim
M.C. Taylor‚Äôs Hiss Golden Messenger¬†is embracing a more political tone on his newest album, Terms of Surrender without leaving behind their traditional folk-inspired Americana sound. One movement clearly on the docket: Defunding public schools. With his new single “I Need a Teacher”, the band pays tribute to the hard working teachers who are suffering poor working conditions in North Carolina, heck, all over the United States. It’s crazy to think that schools haven’t upgraded curriculum and books in over 2 decades, are using computers that run on windows XP, and have 30 students to 1 teacher, where 1/3 of the students in the class require special services that aren’t being met. M.C. Taylor shines a huge light on the struggle in the classroom with his single and continues on each of this tracks highlighting many of the issues ignored by our leaders in power. Now, off my soapbox and back to the vinyl.
The album is being release through independent record store, so call them and pre-order there, but if you need to, grab a copy directly from the artist, bandcamp or through Merge. Happy listening, and enjoy.
