RIYL: Boards of Canada, Tycho, Kenmochi Hidefumi, Bonobo

Label: Warp Records

Singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Stephen James Wilkinson has perplexed music critics since the mid aughts, combining lofi acoustic folk with glitchy electronic beats and experimental loops.  He’s influenced a wide spectrum of like-minded artists, from Black Moth Super Rainbow to Bonobo, and continues to explore his remarkably large and eclectic palette.

According to Wilkinson, Bibio’s latest full-length Ribbons “has been made very much in admiration of nature yet through a tinted window of manmade escapism. Spending more time in the British countryside, walking, photographing, listening and recording has certainly affected how I’ve been thinking and expressing myself in the studio – recalling the beauty in nature and the sadness of seeing it spoiled.”

Apologies that I couldn’t get this written up before the hand-stiched variant sold out, but there are still limited copies of the purple wax available.  Check out the sublime first single Curls below to get a feel of what the rest of the album will sound like.
