RIYL: Skip Spence, Syd Barrett, Red Krayola, Spacemen 3, Beck’s 'One Foot in The Grave' era

Label: Bongo Joe Records

A new year.  A new music label.  The Geneva-based Bongo Joe Records has a real treat for you psych folk fans.  Vinyl lovers, meet the Swiss trio known as Augenwasser.

Augenwasser boasts a vast knowledge of guitar-based genres, blending simple folk music with twee-infused indie rock and drone-tinged psych.  Sweet Defeat could pass for a long lost Velvet Underground demo, Happy Warm Playful drifts along an organ with the stoned finesse of early Spacemen 3 and What’s On Your Mind just shimmers with crazed Syd Barrett splendor.

They also remind me why I love bands led by frontmen with low register vocals.  Think Jonathan Richman of The Modern Lovers, Stephin Merritt of Magnetic Fields, Brad Hargett of Crystal Stilts or Calvin Johnson of Beat Happening.  It’s that mellow melancholia that adds the extra touch of humanity to Drones & Love Songs and makes it so easily listenable.

300 copies await your consumption with your choice of a red, blue or purple risograph printed inlays.  Give the album a test drive below.
