RIYL: Skip Spence, Syd Barrett, Red Krayola, Spacemen 3, Beck’s 'One Foot in The Grave' era

Label: Bongo Joe Records

A new year.  A new music label.  The Geneva-based Bongo Joe Records has a real treat for you psych folk fans.  Vinyl lovers, meet the Swiss trio known as Augenwasser.

Augenwasser boasts a vast knowledge of guitar-based genres, blending simple folk music with twee-infused indie rock and drone-tinged psych. ¬†Sweet Defeat could pass for a long lost Velvet Underground demo, Happy Warm Playful drifts along an organ with the stoned finesse of early Spacemen 3 and What’s On Your Mind just shimmers with crazed Syd Barrett splendor.

They also remind me why I love bands led¬†by frontmen with low register vocals. ¬†Think Jonathan Richman of The Modern Lovers, Stephin Merritt of Magnetic Fields, Brad Hargett of Crystal Stilts or Calvin Johnson of Beat Happening. ¬†It’s that mellow melancholia that adds the extra touch of humanity to Drones & Love Songs and makes it so easily listenable.

300 copies await your consumption with your choice of a red, blue or purple risograph printed inlays.  Give the album a test drive below.
