The Belgian experimental five-piece got a start out in the punk scene, so naturally some punk ethos still remains in their work. Har Nevo sounds like a mashing of post-rock and… God knows what? I’m not sure if one could call this post-metal… All I’m thinking is how much they remind me of Swans. Let’s go with that – they’re very Swans-like. On the track “The Woods I Run From,” Pieter Uyttenhove hauntingly chants and yells descriptions, or qualifications, to defeat and destroy “the serpents” accompanied with droning guitar riffs. Uyttenhove opens “Circe” with the lyric “Live with me inside this old worn skin,” and goes on to sing about a longing of wanting another body – maybe the cover of the album has something to do with this. This album feels very venereal and… just dirty in a way with its primitive, animalistic wheezing and bursts of pain-stricken angry screams. Most of all, Har Nevo feels extremely thematic to me – it feels like a soundtrack to an aimless struggle a medieval warrior is being faced with and perhaps that headless knight on the cover is the album’s protagonist. Stream Har Nevo below via the Spotify stream and see what you think of it. Cheers!

The Details

500 copies on Black 180gr vinyl!
Musically The Black Heart Rebellion have evolved into a tribalistic beast. Guitars lower in the mix, drums and additional percussive elements compliment Pieter Uyttenhove’s impassioned vocals. Opener ‘Avraham’ demonstrates this beautifully. Chimes, bells, cello and percussion blending until Uyttenhove’s breathless vocals begin. Then the feeling of being chased through the woods by an axe-murderer takes over. Something about TBHR reminds me of the much missed The God Machine, but more in the grandiose delivery rather than a direct musical comparision perhaps. There is also a shared vibe with fellow Belgian titans Amenra but without their crushing heaviness. Indeed the friendship between them extends to a collaborative sharing of artistic and musical philosophies and mutual appreciation.
