“Following up last year’s ultra limited Sky Lantern tape “Live at the Double Nickels Collective” comes the debut studio album from Phoenix, Arizona weirdos Sunn Trio. Loosely captained by guitarist and saxophonist “Smokey” Joel Robinson, the band has been tearing up the sun-baked pavement of their desert valley home with an off-kilter masala of funk, free jazz, psychedelia, post-punk, and post-Bishop-brothers Arabic inflections.
Whereas their previous two cassette-only releases emphasized the fractured New Thing-does-Jack Johnson grooves bubbling beneath the ensemble’s attack, this new batch of recordings cranks up the amplifiers and brings Robinson’s kaleidoscopic guitar shred into the forefront, drawing in all corners of the American musical underground into a unique and dense whole that transcends both place and time. If this is desert music, it’s global desert music – the sound of sandstorms blown from the Sonoran to the Sahara and back again.”
