Olga Bell is a Russian-born singer and composer and is 17% of the Dirty Projectors.  The cover art alone will tell you that this is an album dedicated to Olga’s Russian roots.  Weeping violins fade into Russian acapellas with a vulnerable melancholy as a traditional Russian drum beat marches forward, but Olga marries these traditional sounds with a very progressive and modern approach.  You can hear the harmonies that Olga adds to the Dirty Projectors, like the savage howls at the chorus end of “The Gun Has No Trigger” from their most recent album Swing Lo Magellan.
Undoubtedly, this will be a challenging listen to an ear bred on contemporary indie music and pop, but similarly to Dirty Projectors’ albums, it will reward your will to be weird. Â Patience is a strong requirement.
Even if this isn’t your cup of vodka, it will at least prove Olga Bell’s significant influence on the off-kilter sound of the Dirty Projectors.
