RIYL: Beacon, Makeup + Vanity Set, Jasmin Kaset
Label: YK Records
If there was any artist that effectively took the minimal synthscape torch from John Carpenter into the modern electronic renaissance, my vote would go to Matthew Pusti’s project Makeup and Vanity Set. Every album he puts out is stacked with conceptual sound textures, pulsating and driving beats and gorgeous synth tones.
Initially, I was worried about his new project with Jasmin Kaset. I felt that too much vocal accompaniment would water down Makeup and Vanity Set’s pile-driving emotional synth scores, but was pleasantly surprised with the first single New. Similar to groups like Beacon and HTRK, Kaset’s confident delivery cuts through the textures like a shiv and becomes an essential instrument in of herself. Can’t wait to hear the rest!
