Label: Lives Through Magic
Lives Through Magic is a brand new label started by former Death From Above (DFA) label head Kris Petersen. Petersen explains the name in the synopsis clarifying that “lives” can be pronounced either way, bringing the phrase a duality in meaning. This massive compilation is to benefit two charities – Gray Area Foundation for the Arts, which is a 501(3)(c) organization which set up a fire relief fund in response to the Ghost Ship tragedy, and the Trans Assistance Project, which is rather self-explanatory. This arrangement is unique, not only due to the artists involved, but the fact that you get to choose what song from the compilation you want to be pressed to vinyl. The only song you can’t choose due to length is RĂłisĂn Murphy’s, which only comes on the cassette release anyhow. With 42 songs on the compilation, you’re bound to find something that suits your fancy. You don’t often get an opportunity to customize a record, so why not take advantage while you can? Listen to a partial stream of the compilation below via the Bandcamp player and see what you think of it. Cheers!
Hi there - In case you don’t know who I am, I'm Kris Petersen, former label manager at DFA records, and an avid fan of underground electronic music and DIY spaces. I, with the help of literal dozens of other talented folks have put together a compilation titled Lives Through Magic to benefit the victims of the Ghost Ship fire in Oakland, CA. All proceeds (minus physical production costs and shipping) will be equally divided between the Gray Area Foundation For The Arts (an Oakland 5013c organization that has set up a fire relief fund, as seen here: www.youcaring.com/firevictimsofoaklandfiredec232016-706684) and the Trans Assistance Project, which is an ongoing program that helps trans folks meet their real-time financial, legal, and medical needs.
The title Lives Through Magic is adapted from a quote by pop Keith Haring about drawing - but I believe the sentiment applies to all forms of creativity, individual and communal. “Drawing is still basically the same as it has been since prehistoric times. It brings together man and the world. It lives through magic.” (I also appreciate the wordplay created by the alternate definitions and pronunciation of “lives”.) This compilation has been birthed due to a tragic event, but I do not want the compilation to be a souvenir of a tragedy. I am instead aiming for a positive document of the beauty that exists in the minds, bodies, and spirits of our small, but global community. Many of the folks contributing have all played in, lived in, and truly loved DIY spaces like Ghost Ship.
I thank you for your consideration and support! Please keep an eye on this space and livesthroughmagic.tumblr.com for audio previews and short features and interviews with the contributing artists.
