Perte d’identité will be Montrealer Marie Davidson’s full-length debut. From the few tracks that are available from this to preview, this sounds like something straight of the Belgian cold wave (read: something Minimal Wave would reissue). I’m sure she’d appreciate me writing that as she (or her label Weyrd Son) has “City of Brussels” as a tag attached to this on Bandcamp – perhaps Weyrd Son is a Belgian label and this is just a coincidence? If you’re curious about their other releases, they run along the same vein as this so if darkwave with chilled vocal delivery (usually in a foreign language or English that’s heavily accented) is your thing, Weyrd Son‘s probably got you covered. If you want something that sounds as devoid of hope and joy as Marie Davidson looks in that bathtub, this is for you… That said, Weyrd Son‘s only been around since last year and I have to say they’re filling quite the niche… Marie Davidson released an EP prior to this, so I’ll link you to that as well as the three tracks you can hear off of Perte d’identité. Check it all out below and see what you think of it. Cheers!

The Details

RELEASE DATE April 4 2014

Cat. Nr. WyS-005

Perte d'identité, which translates to “loss of identity,” is the debut LP by composer, singer and poet Marie Davidson, one of the finest artists rising from the electronic dark-synth scene in Montreal. Her voice is a stark half-spoken monotone which will tell you stories from which you can’t escape unchanged. With this release, she refines her storytelling with suffocating tales that are both intimate and melancholic. Meanwhile, her miraculously human electronic rhythms are as frantic and hypnotic as an intense stare. In her premier full length album, she invites you to take a look in the peephole, revealing a fascinating cinematic picture. What you will be shown are the parts of yourself which you're scared and ashamed of, but also the ones that reveal a haunting and glamorous sensuality. Not only will she spin you a tale, but her music will immerse your soul in images of sweet anxiety. "This album is about romance and a quest for meaning."
