RIYL: Yeezus-era Kanye, Oneohtrix Point Never, SOPHIE, FKA twigs
Enigmatic electronic artist and sonic pioneer Alejandra Ghersi has been unearthing new and alien soundscapes since the early 2010s as Arca, collaborating with Bjork, FKA twigs, Mykki Blanco and, most famously, Kanye West. If you dug Yeezus’ crunchy, warped glitch aesthetics, you can tip your hat to Arca’s singular wizardry. Ye’s Hold My Liquor samples Arca’s Feminine from her 2013 record &&&&&, long sold out and quite hard to find…until now. Finally getting a proper release after seven years, &&&&& is available again on wax. Huzzah.
A limited red vinyl variant has already sold out on Bleep, but Boomkat has an exclusive white vinyl slab limited to 500 copies that’s still available. Each variant is etched on the b-side similar to the original pressing. I doubt they last long, so if you even kinda sorta want this thing…don’t think about it for too long! Listen to a few of the tracks below or just head over to YouTube and listen to the whole album. It’s undoubtedly one of the most original electronic projects of the past decade.
For anyone who can remember, Arca‚Äôs &&&&& was a moment. Its 25-minute stretch of coiling, contorted grime and glitch; dub and hip hop dropped with the buzz of an impending co-production credit on Kanye West‚Äôs Yeezus in 2013. It included cuts of sound and beats that were too weird for that pop project, while becoming a piece of experimental art that what would come to define what is by now broadly known as a ‚Äėpost-club‚Äô sound. It‚Äôs music that is as visceral as it is experimental; made as much for the mind, as it is for the body.
Boomkat Exclusive white vinyl pressing. Limited Edition, etched b-side. Includes a download of the album dropped to your account.
