RIYL: Black Joe Lewis, The Weary Boys

Label: White Couch Records

Around the turn of this decade down here in Austin, there were two bands that local music fans couldn’t recommend more.  If you wanted soulful bluesy funk, you went to see Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears.  If you wanted some outlaw country, you had to check out the Weary Boys.  Fast forward to 2016…The Weary Boys have broken up and it’s been a long time since we’ve heard from Black Joe Lewis.  I’m driving down to work and KABOOM, the radio mentions that there’s a new band in town with Black Joe Lewis and The Weary Boys’ Mario Matteoli at the helm.  How could this possibly go wrong?

The Joe Jacksons are a combination of all the strengths from both bands, but with a big emphasis on crispy garage rock.  Black Joe’s funkified vocals shred through the fuzz and distortion like a kitana blade on a stick of butter.  If and when I get a jukebox in the house, this 7″ will have a permanent home there.  Instant repeater, baby.  When’s the full length comin out, boys?!
