RIYL: Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Budos Band, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings

Label: Daptone Records

I just turned on the Daptone Signal. For those of you in the know that’s all you need.

The latest 45 from my favorite NYC label drips with blues, funk, gospel, and soul. If you are a devout member of the church of soul, then The Como Mamas are you. On this record, The Como Mamas are backed by an all-star band consisting of Homer Steinweiss, Thomas Brenneck, Bosco Mann, and Jimmy Hill.

It’s a funky and upbeat lead single for their forthcoming LP that Daptone announced last week.

Order this one and start your Daptone variant collection today! They’re probably my favorite records to collect right now.

The Details

Limited qty with random color vinyl available only at the Daptone Shop.

THE COMO MAMAS are DELLA DANIELS, ESTER MAE WILBOURNE, and ANGELIA TAYLOR. A gospel trio from Como, Mississippi. Their first album, Get an Understanding, was an all a capella favorite among many gospel fans. In December of 2015, the Como Mamas flew up to New York to appear as part of the DAPTONE SUPER SOUL REVUE which was playing three nights at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. Not wanting to miss the oppor tunity to record these amazing singers at the Daptone studio, we booked a recording session for a few days after the show. This time, though, they would be backed by The GLORIFIERS BAND, consisting of top Daptone musicians HOMER STEINWEISS, THOMAS BRENNECK, BOSCO MANN, and JIMMY HILL. The result is an album of raw soulful traditional gospel like you’ve never heard before. Angelia growls the lead on “Move Upstairs,” which shuffles down the line like a freight train. On the flip, Della “counts her blessings” over a grinding four minutes of gospel-funk. Amen, sisters.
