Scott Hansen’s ever-growing electracoustic project Tycho has grown leaps and bounds since the release of his unassuming debut EP in 2002.  His live act up to 2011 was merely Scott with a laptop in front of video loops of his artwork and photography.  2014’s Awake album brought a full band into his lush synthscopic world, a major step in Tycho’s overall tone and, most importantly, the live act.  Their 2016 follow-up Epoch, while similar to the previous albums’ atmosphere, indicated that the band was moving slowly away from the chill downtempo vibes and veering towards more guitar-centric tracks and dancier beats.  This year will see Tycho’s biggest change yet with Weather, the first record since 2006 not released on Ghostly International.

Honestly, not seeing Tycho and Ghostly together is quite unnerving.  Both entities are foundations in their field of design, atmosphere, art and electronic music.  Even more surprising is newest single Pink & Blue, the first Tycho song to feature a vocal performance that isn’t a sample.  Is Scott going for the pop charts on this one?  Is this indicative of the album as a whole?  The song’s instrumental still boasts that rich, vibrant, immediately-recognizable sound, but there is something very very different happening here.  Even the cover art is vastly contrasting to the minimal design from his previous albums.

While I try to process all of this, there is a beautiful limited colorway of the record on Mom + Pop.  There’s also a dinked variant on pink vinyl HERE for UK shoppers.  Grab the vinyl colorway of your choosing and let’s all take a couple of deep breaths.  This could be the start of a great new world for Tycho.  Maybe.
