RIYL: Peter Broderick, Sigur Ros, Bon Iver

Label: Dead Oceans

The first article I remember reading about Julianna Barwick was her recollection of her childhood growing up in the farmlands of rural Louisiana and Missouri.  A preacher’s daughter, her free hours consisted of “harmonizing with random sounds, making up songs about whatever she was doing at the moment, and singing long, loud notes in hollowed-out spaces like parking garages and inside the trunk of a giant tree just to see what the echo would sound like.”

As a father of a 4-year old girl, there is something inexplicably beautiful about a child, abandoned of all ego or self consciousness, singing joyfully at the top of her lungs.  Julianna Barwick represents that humble innocence, fully realized in the form of sweeping ambient melodies comprised almost completely of her voice alone.  2013’s incredible full-length Nepenthe can induce tears in my eyes within the first 30 seconds.  It’s powerful stuff, and newest single Nebula empowers a simple synth lead to help carry Barwick’s delivery to further heights.

As of now, you have the opportunity to get an additional 7″ along with the flesh-colored vinyl.  The 7″ is limited to 500 only, and I can’t imagine those being around for more than a few days.
