Balmorhea is the sound of rural Texas.  Similar to post-rock juggernauts like Explosions in the Sky and This Will Destroy You, Balmorhea use the topography of Texas’ sprawling plains as inspiration, but their approach is much more minimal and space-conscious than their peers.  Drawing from classical influences, minimal ambience and folk, founding members Mike Muller and Rob Lowe (no, not that Rob Lowe) and their bandmates craft a soundtrack that is as simple as it is sublime.
They would be the perfect choice for a Cormac McCarthy film soundtrack, and I’m honored to call them friends. Â Western Vinyl, home to J Tillman, Dirty Projectors, Peter Broderick and many other talents, practically never offers limited vinyl product, so this one is truly special.
Limited Edition 7" on custom colored vinyl. High-quality download w/ bonus material included.
Balmorhea brings everything full circle, returning to the simple structures and melancholic tone that colored their first recordings. HEIR I starts things off slowly with a Wurlitzer's somber tremolo and some gently propulsive electric bass, soon joined by vibes and a soaring violin melody. HEIR II opens with a gorgeous ukulele melody, which is slowly engulfed in Kendall Clark's expressive drumming, eventually giving way to a frenetic wall of strings.
