RIYL: Margo & The Nuclear So & Sos, Andrew Bird, Kevin Devine, Sea Wolf
Richard Edwards, frontman to Margot & The Nuclear So & So’s is putting out his most recent endeavor, The Soft Ache and The Moon. Richard has been leading up to this for a very long time, and this will be the first new material since Verdugo in 2018. It never seems to be an easy road for Richard, getting ill, writers block, difficulties with depression and now a world wide pandemic, but he’s pushed through it all to deliver a very personal and expansive album. ” I Wrote the thing over three years, and recorded it over a year. The hope is sounds like the empty ocean […] and it makes you feel something for a minute.”
His first single, “January” which dropped 2 weeks ago, is delicate, swelling and rich with life and momentum. It can be said that this could be some of his best solo work to date, but you can make that judgement for yourself. The second single which was released worldwide a today (4/23) “Inchyra Blue” has a steady flow, almost as the waves crash into the sand developing and undulating upon arrival. I see myself standing on the Oregon coast, watching as the waves hit listen to this song. It’s very soothing and cathartic.
Check out his webstore for the 3 different vinyl available, in splatter (signed), Clear, and a mystery 7″ that’s hand numbered. I think the best deal is the bundle, which is the Splatter, 7″ and a T-shirt. Do what you do, and grab it if it suits your fancy. Cheers.
Brooklyn Vegan Write-up:
Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s frontman Richard Edwards will release his third solo album, The Soft Ache And The Moon, on June 12 . He co-produced it with Mike Bloom (who also worked on both of Richard’s other solo albums) and he says, “As has been the unfortunate case for the past few years of my life, upon getting started on a new record, I fell ill and had to make other plans. I built a small studio in my house, where I was stuck for over a year of illness, and worked on finishing it long distance with my Los Angeles based band. It is more or less about things never quite getting back to normal after a personal cataclysm. And hopefully it’s actually about more than that, too.”
Richard recently released lead single “January,” and we’re now premiering second single “Inchyra Blue.” Both songs find Richard making blissful, atmospheric piano balladry and building to swelling, multi-layered crescendos. Richard says that he wrote both songs while dancing alone in his house (something a lot of us are probably doing lately). “At its core, [“Inchyra Blue”] is a self empowerment anthem about home renovation,” he adds about the newest one. “At its not core, it is about something else. I always love my friend Pete Thomas’ drumming, but I especially love it here.” Listen to both new songs below.
