RIYL: space rock

Label: Not Not Fun

Sly Vinyl’s Josh Saposnekoo wrote up this album’s vinyl edition, but did you know that there’s also a cheap limited cassette version as well? Crystal Dorval, hailing from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, came out with¬†Natural Phenomena last year and… well, I guess this slipped under my radar. I feel as if my ignorance is only magnified further each time I write up a piece for this site… mas vale tarde que nunca, s√≠ o no? In any case,¬†Natural Phenomena¬†sounds like it could’ve come out on¬†Rocket Girl with the likes of F√ľxa, Low and Silver Apples.¬†Natural Phenomena soars through a cloudless, bitterly cold sky in spite of the vicious sun casting its radiation towards us.¬†Natural Phenomena is something that just… is. It goes with the flow, blissed out whilst doing so. The guitars are submerged in a field of warm cotton, and Doval’s vocal work is the gentle mist that cascades over it. This is how psychedelia (might I say space rock?) is done. Listen to¬†Natural Phenomena¬†below via the Spotify player and see what you think of it. Cheers!

The Details

Limited European tour cassette edition of Crystal Dorval‚Äôs sophomore White Poppy full-length, Natural Phenomena. Same content as the LP but housed on pale pink pro-dubbed tapes with violet-imprinted shells. About 55 currently in stock. Here‚Äôs the NNF text from before: ‚ÄúCrystal Dorval from Vancouver, Canada has been making healing, distorted rug-gaze music from a coastal mindset all her own since 2011. Natural Phenomena is her second album, and it echoes 2013‚Äôs previous self-titled effort in its isolationist origins, as the record emerged slowly across a 9-month retreat alone on a farm on Vancouver Island: ‚ÄúSome days I would only add one tiny guitar line or keyboard texture and that would be it for the day‚Ķ it was a long process.‚ÄĚ However grueling and gradual the method, what accrued is gold ‚Äď 10 of Dorval‚Äôs deepest dreamdives, starry ambient pools, and dissolved guitar designs, ghosted through a lens of grey-skied pop. Songs wax and wane across faded rainbows of guitar, sunrise keyboards, looped percussion, and vocal ocean-spray. Behind Dorval‚Äôs gauze of warm noise glows something pure and newer than new age: ‚ÄúMy hope is that these positive feelings will be communicated sonically, or in essence, and will be enriching for listeners.‚ÄĚ A high height for a climbing talent; White Poppy blooms on cliffs of light. Written and recorded by C. Dorval. Mixed and mastered by J. Arner. Artwork by C. Dorval.‚ÄĚ
