A surprise release of âDr. Dog meat and potatoes.â Nothing too fancy, but just what we needed from them. The title seems to say a lot about how they approached these songs. After over a decade evolving their sound, adding more eccentricities and electronics along the wayâthey presented a full-circle culmination earlier this year with their polished-pop-revamp of early experimental basement recordingsâDr. Dog stripped the bells and whistles off their Pee-Weeâs Playhouse, keeping the humble indie folk frame intact upon the foundation of Scott and Tobyâs existentially contemplative writing.
If you skip out on or miss the cassette, Dr. Dog has made this latest release âname your priceâ on Bandcamp, with 100% of proceeds from digital sales going to Southern Poverty Law Center.
P.S. The Bandcamp artwork could be hinting at a vinyl release on the way in 2017!

Have you ever wondered, âGee, I wonder when weâll hear some new Dr. Dog tunes?â.
No, I donât think you have. In fact, no one has. We put out more music than the Wolfman and Frankenstein combined. Theyâre lightweights. And now we have an even newer album. Gah? Thatâs right. Itâs called Abandoned Mansion and itâs out today. Its a mood record. What I call Easy Peasy listening. Nothing too jarring or atonal. No blips or bloops or anything else that might unsettle you. Thereâs plenty of upright bass for any of you tall people. And, also plenty of acoustic guitar for those of you trying to live off the grid. Oh, and the harmonies put Godâs own angels to shame. Also lightweights. We did a song a day for two weeks. And, almost everything was tracked live, except for some pretty egregious organ clams that we had to punch in over. Thematically, this is Dr. Dog meat and potatoes. Our proverbial wheelhouse. Songs of the oldest questions. Songs as tools to finding oneself. And most importantly, songs of acceptance. Acceptance of yourself and acceptance of the others around you. Enough pontificating. The album is great and it wonât cost you an arm and a leg either. Unless, you are literally made out of money.
Speaking of money, itâs been a shocking few weeks and while we didnât make the record with this intention it seems like a good time to try and help good people who are trying to do good things. If you buy a download of the album between now and the end of January, 100% of proceeds will go to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
