RIYL: vaporwave a e s t h e t i c, Oneohtrix Point Never
Label: SEAGRAVE
I can’t tell you how glad I am to have found a label such as SEAGRAVE. Here’s yet another great, surreal release from the label courtesy of Roadside Picnic. Side A starts out as vaporwave fare a la Macintosh Plus or Chuck Person and then it proceeds to get stranger and more spaced out. A few minutes in, I had to check to make sure my speakers weren’t malfunctioning. The recording starts cutting out to silence after you’ve been given time to simmer on the muzak horns and then you get to a recorded conversation from what seems like a Blockbuster training video backed by deep, throaty drone that reminds me of Truck Driver (fka Clayboy). The juxtaposition of cold, forced plastic versus the billowy cotton of this drone loop makes for a bliss out. “Anchor Store Principles” melts the mask of training videos away and exposes how ugly they are. The B side, a live recording, is equally as absurd and surreal as the A side using semantic satiation in full force. Listen to both tracks below via the Bandcamp player and see what you think of them. Cheers!
