RIYL: Kedr Livanskiy, Tei Shi

Label: Always Human Tapes

Lisa is an otherworldly take on R&B, but don’t call it PBR&B. Like Kode9 or Andy Stott, their music can land in a ballpark but it’s like someone constantly going between 1st and 2nd base to avoid the basemen. It is and it isn’t (insert whatever here). Despite the lo-fi atmosphere, the tape is quite silken and a pleasure to listen to. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say I’ll be coming back to this tape quite a bit throughout the year and for a long time to come. I’m reminded of early Bowery Electric and the likes of TM404 and Kedr Livanskiy. “untitled hand-holding” has to be my favorite track at the moment, with it settling in to a loop of wordless vocals from Marie Nicolo floating among the percussive fuzz. I look forward to more from this duo. Listen to Lisa below via the Bandcamp player and see what you think of it. Cheers!

The Details

Lisa is a collaboration between lifelong friends Marie Nicolo (formerly of Worshyper, Power Animal) and Chaperone. The two set out to trade tracks and forge a pseudo-r&b project known as Lisa. The result is an amalgamation of Chaperone’s whirring, warped loops and chilling atmospheres with delicate, floating vocals. It sounds like a few of your favorite techno and coldwave tapes got stuck in the deck, played back at the wrong speed, and were remixed by Andy Stott – a future classic to be sure.
