RIYL: getting sick
Label: The Lumen Lake
You ever gotten sick, suddenly? Like, 0-100 real quick sick? That kind of illness where you can feel the come up. You can’t explain exactly what it is, but it’s awful. You feel like death. You want to find yourself a nice seat and just pass out. Or plop down on the bed. However, as you stare at the ceiling you feel the world slipping beneath your person. The ceiling starts to turn, like a wheel, but it’s not infinite. Once the floor goes away, there’s nothing but a pitch black chasm. You feel like you’re falling and getting smaller. You start to think how small you are in the grand scheme of things, metaphysically and physically speaking. Everything becomes a giant to you. Even that ceiling fan at the dead center of the ceiling starts looking like a windmill as it grows and you shrink. Mix One feels like a fever dream mixed with a gnarly case of vertigo. An experience you can appreciate in retrospect, but all you can feel in the moment is terror absolute; you’re no longer the driver at the wheel. Listen to Mix One below via the Bandcamp player and see what you think of it. Cheers!
The Nomadic Female DJ Troupe are Francine Perry, Lisa Busby and Ruthie Woodward, who converge as a collective through the shared use of found sonic materials within their work.
Initially formed as a live ensemble in 2015, they explored ‘roaming’ outdoor performances, working site-responsively and in an improvised way. They’ve popped up at festivals and gigs with live mixes, performing off stage and often without mains electricity, also led workshops and undertaken other interventions/actions including aerobics and karaoke.
The group’s unique methodology blurs the lines between experimental live improvisation and more traditional mixing practices; using live sung voices in the mix; investigating plurivocal and collectivized structures inspired by feminist activist histories.
