If you’re like me, you’re constantly on the hunt for new music. You don’t push away the classics, you’re just always looking to satiate your ever-growing music hoarding addiction. You also take some pleasure in being the first on the scene. This year’s Inaugural InCuya Festival in Cleveland Ohio allows you to do all of this.

InCuya, named for being Downtown Cleveland, inside Cuyahoga County, offers a great variety of established and up next performers with New order, Awolnation, and the Avett Brothers, as well as newcomers Daniel Caesar and Tank and the Bangas. Your music options are as diverse and rich as Cleveland’s history:

The Modern Electric

Seeing The Modern Electric  (A Cleveland original) perform the Wait is the minimum I need to have a great weekend:

SZA

SZA, the female vocalist you’ve heard on just about every collaboration in the last 4 years released CNTRL, her first major label debut last year:

New Order

New Order’s electric sounds date back to the mid 1970s, but it is almost impossible to pick just one to represent their music as they’ve changed over the decades:

Booker T Jones

Not to be outdone, Booker T Jones took the stage in Memphis in the 1960s and will be one of the most exciting and historic acts overlooking Lake Erie over the weekend:

Avett Brothers

It’s not fair for me to write about the Avett Brothers because they’ve been my favorite songwriters since they performed at Morrison Colorado’s Red Rocks Ampitheatre in 2007:

Cake

Along the same line, there has not been a release I’ve spammed more than Cake’s Fashion Nugget:

K Flay

I’m on the fence on the most anticipated performance of the weekend. It is between K Flay and Kitten. I’m sure by mid August I’ll have made up my mind twelve different times:

Kitten

Hunting for a live Kitten performance around me is what led me to InCuya:

And of course there’s the performers InCuya is introducing me to for the first time— They., Ezri, The Jack Fords, and Arkells:

The schedule isn’t available yet, but I have insider information that the music won’t start before Noon, so this is a good opportunity to get rest or go sight seeing in Cleveland. As a special bonus, all ticket holders will also have general admission tickets during the festival weekend to The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (Another Cleveland Original).

Take it from a Pro

New to festival life? Here are some must-haves from someone who has made every mistake attending outdoor shows:

  • A plastic container of sunblock
  • 24-oz sealed water bottle
  • Blanket
  • Baseball cap
  • Sunglasses
  • Phone charger (battery pack is best)
  • Poncho(s)
  • Debit card / cash
  • Car keys (of course, but keep an eye on them, see my Bunbury write up for the reference)
  • Ear plugs (Just in case someone models their performance after Dinosaur Jr.)

The InCuya Festival is produced by the newly formed Cleveland Concert Company and AEG Presents  in association with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the City of Cleveland and Destination Cleveland. They’ve come together to make a world-class music festival around music, and other great notes about Cleveland, including it’s food.
