Denver, CO duo Tennis began during an 8 month sailing expedition resulting material for their debut album Cape Dory. For their third album Yours Conditionally, released March, they returned to sea once more for inspiration. Just a few weeks ago Tennis surprised us with an unexpected EP, We can Die Happy. While this EP may not be a conceptually sea-inspired album, it certainly explores new sonic waters. Their dreamy, retro-pop sensibilities aren’t gone, though. But, it feels a less like you’re at sea, peacefully rocking to the rhythm of the waves, and more like you’re driving on a long, desolate road with the windows down and your foot heavy on the gas. Not content to go with the flow, but through conflict, confusion and self-doubt, determined to make it to the other side. Darkly emotional dancy tunes like “No Exit” and “Diamond Rings” would fit perfectly on stage at The Roadhouse in Twin Peaks. Most compelling Alaina Moore’s account of her unique method for dealing with anxiety in “I Miss That Feeling.” Speaking about the her anxiety on, Moore said “I can’t eliminate it, but I can reorient my relationship to it from dread to…something like intimacy. The moment a panic attack begins, it eclipses the world around me. In this lyric, I profess my devotion to it and give in to the experience.”

We Can Die Happy feels like a reorienting of our estimation of Tennis. Still familiar and dreamy, but a bit more forward leaning and purposefully directional. It’s a great compliment to Yours Conditionally, but robust enough to stand on it’s own. Pick up your copy on vinyl, CD, or digital in their web store.
